How we Serve the Region


UMC is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and also one of four ABA-accredited Regional Burn Centers in the entire state of Texas.  

We serve both adults and children within west Texas, eastern New Mexico, and parts of Oklahoma for their specialized trauma and burn care needs.

The education is FREE and meets your profession’s recertification requirements for Texas and NREMT.  Physician CME will be offered soon through a partnership with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

About UMC in Lubbock


Our trauma and burn services are just one part of our comprehensive hospital system.  In partnership with Texas Tech University’s physicians and School of Medicine, our hospital provides dedicated, specialized care for medical and trauma patients of all ages.

 

Recognition of Child Abuse


Dr. Brian Payne (Chief Medical Officer, UMC Children’s Hospital), Melissa Sickles RN, BSN (Pediatric Program Coordinator at UMC Trauma & Burn), and J. Chad Curry LP, FP-C (Training Chief, UMC EMS) discuss the assessment and signs suggesting child abuse and our legal obligations for reporting as healthcare professionals. 

The second part of this education offers a multi-disciplinary panel discussion discussing child abuse assessment and care for EMS, nursing, and physicians.

One hour of CE credit is offered for EMS recertification.  We are currently working on CNE and CME approval for our nursing and physician recertification needs.

Prehospital and Emergency Center Care of the Burn Patient


Originally offered as a virtual education course in September 2020 with John Griswold MD, FACS (Medical Director of the Harnar Burn Center) and J. Chad Curry LP, FP-C (Training Chief, UMC EMS), we recorded the proceedings and developed it as an online continuing education course you can take today!

The education covers emergent burn trauma assessment and patient care in detail, with information applicable to all prehospital and emergency center staff.

Successful completion of this course offers two hours of CE credit for EMS recertification.  We are currently working on CNE and CME approval for our nursing and physician recertification needs.

Acute Head Injury: An EPIC Response


On January 12, 2021, Robyn Richmond MD, FACS (Assistant Trauma Medical Director for UMC), Dr. Troutman MD, FACEP, FAEMS (Medical Director, Lubbock Area Prehospital Consortium), and J. Chad Curry LP, FP-C (Training Chief, UMC EMS) presented an in-depth discussion on prehospital and hospital care of the acute head injury patient.  This live, virtual education has now been adapted as an enduring video-based education you can access at any time.

The education examines the initial care, the “H Bombs” that can cause harm to the brain injured patient, and examines the recent EPIC study focusing on prehospital care of these patients.  

Successful completion of this course offers two hours of CE credit for EMS recertification.  We are currently working on CNE and CME approval for our nursing and physician recertification needs.
